Underground
[adverb, adjective, noun, verb; un-der-ground]
Definition:
- Music that disregards commercial considerations in favor of artistic sincerity, creativity, and freedom of expression. Aspires to artistic individuality rather than conformity to passing fads and trends.
- A belief, practice, or culture that exists outside of the mainstream. Generally antagonistic of existing social, political, artistic, and cultural norms. Provocative.
- A music scene that hides from those who are less devoted, and who would trivialize the music and the culture.
Origin:
The underground can be traced back to sexual, spiritual, and political subcultures. It opens up space for experimentation and for critiques against the mainstream.
